May. 24th, 2004 02:53 pmI'm in for leaving on Thursday night. Katie will help us steal and
drive
Scott's burban. Lionel, is the grandmothership coming? I suppose that
depends on how many heads we'll have.
I can get the O2's refilled as the hangar is close to where I work.

Subject: Memorial Day weekend in the Owens
Hey everyone,
It's time for that springtime ritual - Memorial Day
at Walt's Point! Launch, turn right, stuff you and
your glider into the saddle, half an hour of circling
and you're looking down on sun glinting off snow,
turquoise lakes, and majestic towering granite cliffs.
Two hours later you're over Big Pine crossing the
valley at 14K, and then onto a whole new mountain
range - just point and go! Of course, you could also
already be on the ground sweating and cursing the
Postage Stamp - but that's fate! Got your adreneline
flowing, this Monday morning didn't I?
So, to begin planning, I'm thinking the following:
** Scott's burban (sans Scott who is basking in
Turkish seas right now) should take off Thursday
evening for those interested in beginning the weekend
early.
** What other car(s) are going?
** Who's going to come drive for the weekend? I move
that since Memorial Day driving is so awe inspiring as
you are able to drive the length of the Owens Valley
visiting hot springs, visiting abandoned mines and
petroglyphs, learning about flying the Owens so that
you can be ready for your first xc in the Mecca, that
we waive the typical semester's worth of work day
credits (ok, just kidding, you earn 'em, but believe
me, it's worth it!)
** Figure out your O2 so that you can top out over
Kearsarge and the Whites and head north without fearing
the infamous, oxygen-starved "Who am I anyway and why
is the world rotating around me right now?" thoughts.
** Who knows what the current status is on O2?
Ahh, it's good be a pilot in California, now isn't it?
Who needs coffee when you can just drive up to Walt's
to get your heart pounding?
